Setting up a non-BT Yahoo! email account for SMTP authentication |
|
If you have your own email domain, or you have an email address issued by your previous Internet Service Provider, you should still be able to configure Outlook Express (or other email program) to send and receive emails using that account if you're a BT Yahoo! customer.
However, it's important to configure your non-BT Yahoo! account settings correctly. Even if you've been able to send and receive emails on your non-BT Yahoo! account without difficulty so far, you will need to configure your program's settings.
What you need to do
- Set up your non-BT Yahoo! email account in Outlook Express as follows:
- From the 'Tools' menu in Outlook Express, choose 'Accounts' and select the 'Mail' tab
- Double-click on the non-BT Yahoo! account you wish to configure
- Select the 'Servers' tab. Incoming mail (POP3) should show your non-BT email server, whereas Outgoing mail (SMTP) will say "mail.btinternet.com". The username and password for your non-BT account will be shown. Be sure to leave the 'Log on using Secure Password Authentication' check-box un-ticked.
- Place a tick in the "My server requires authentication" check-box, then click on the Settings button next to it.
- Select the 'Log on using' option and enter your BT Yahoo! Mail account username and password. Tick the 'Remember password' option. Click OK, and OK again, followed by Close.
- IMPORTANT: You won't be able to send mail until your non-BT Yahoo! email account has been verified. Please follow the instructions at www.btyahoo.com/verify to verify your account.
You'll need to make these changes on all non-BT Yahoo! email accounts you wish to access using your email program via your BT Yahoo! connection.
If you don't use Outlook Express, please refer to your email program's Help or manual for instructions on how to set up another your non-BT email account so that you log on using your BT Yahoo! username and password.
You'll also need to repeat these steps on any other computer you may use to check your non-BT Yahoo! email account.
- Check that your normal BT Yahoo! email address (ending in "@btopenworld.com" or "@btinternet.com") is correctly configured in your email program. This will ensure you'll receive any future communication from us which may affect your email service.

Please note - if you connect to the internet via another Internet Service Provider (ISP):
- For your non-BT email addresses, you won't be able to send mail using our mail server (mail.btinternet.com) - please refer to your ISP for further advice about sending mail.
- For BT email addresses, you won't be able to use our mail server to send mail except with BT Yahoo! Premium Mail. Get BT Yahoo! Premium Mail
